Tropics heating up

September 2, 2010

hurricane

The tropics are finally getting active as we head into the early part of September. Hurricane Earl has been upgraded to  Category 4 status as it approaches the east coast.

If you have travel plans that will take you to the east coast for Labor Day you might want to check ahead on the status of your vacation spot.

Behind Earl we have two more named tropical systems that will be worth watching over the next few days.

Labor Day Weekend Forecast

September 1, 2010

Expect rain and t-storms to be off and on today.  A cold front pushed moisture into our area this morning, and this should help kick off more rain this afternoon.  The front itself is going to usher in much cooler and drier air just in time for our weekend!  Expect high temperatures to drop into the low to mid 80s by Friday.  This weekend’s lows will drop into the low to mid 50s again, so another taste of fall is just around the corner.  Labor Day looks fantastic as well, with lots of sunshine, lower humidity, and temperatures into the mid and upper 80s.

Hurricane Earl Update

August 31, 2010

hurricaneThe forecast track for Earl remains very uncertain over the next 3 days as it moves very close to the North and South Carolina coasts.  As of 7 am, the track takes Earl just off the coast of Cape Hatteras by Friday PM.  If the track shifts west by 50 miles, we could see the first land-falling hurricane of the 2010 season.  For those of you who may have plans heading to the Carolinas, keep a close eye on Earl.  Even if the storm does not make a landfall, the rip current, beach erosion, and heavy rain threat will still exist until Sunday.

Tropics Heating Up…

August 30, 2010

hurricaneAs of 7 am, we are tracking 2 hurricanes in the Atlantic.  Thankfully none of them appear to have a course set for the US, but Hurricane Earl will come very close the the Carolina coast as we head towards mid week.  If the storm stays offshore, its biggest impacts will be coastal erosion and high surf.  If it moves a bit more to the west, it could possibly impact North or South Carolina as a major hurricane with winds greater than 115 mph.  If you have plans for the east coast of the US this week, keep tracking Earl as it moves closer and closer.

Cool Morning Lows

August 26, 2010

JASONLOWSThe cold front that moved through yesterday morning has dropped morning lows into the low 50s here in NWA and upper 50s and low 60s here in the RV!  What a treat considering we are in late August, and average lows this time of year are in the muggy upper 60s and low 70s!  AND, we’ve been starting out lately in the upper 70s and low 80s.  This is so nice!!  An early taste of fall, so get outside and enjoy the next couple of mornings, because by Sunday morning, we’re back into the 60s and 70s for our morning lows.

Heat Relief??

August 23, 2010

JASWXWe are finally going to be getting a break from the dog days of summer!  A significant cold front will be moving into the area late Tuesday and into Wednesday.   Behind it, the air is MUCH drier and a bit cooler, so temperatures will take a good 20º drop for overnight lows, and a good 10º drop for daytime highs!  That means here in NWA, we will see lows dipping down into the mid 50s!!  Here in the RV, lows will drop to near 60º!!  We haven’t seen cool temps like this in about 3 months, so it is a nice treat for us heading into the middle of the week.  Afternoon highs in NWA will only be in the low to mid 80s, upper 80s and low 90s in the RV.  The air will be much less humid, so even though it will still be warm, it will be much more comfortable!

Weekend Rain??

August 19, 2010

We are tracking a cold front across the northern Rockies today.  It is slowly advancing towards the east and will have an impact on our weekend forecast.  Expect hot conditions out ahead of this front for the next 48 hours with highs topping out in the mid 90s in NWA, upper 90s to near 100º in the RV.  Once the front arrives late Friday and into Saturday, expect showers and thunderstorms to become more widespread.  This front will be weakening as it arrives, so not everyone will see the rain, and we are not expecting severe weather.

Cooler Morning Lows…

August 16, 2010

tempsTemperatures this morning were a little lower then where they have been the past several weeks, thanks to the cold front that moved through over the weekend.  Cooler temps were more noticeable in NWA, dropping into the upper 60s in Rogers and at XNA.  In the RV, temps were down into the upper 70s, still very warm, but better then the low 80s we started out in for the past several weeks.   Expect cooler temps for the next several mornings, before the muggy upper 70s and low 80s make a return by mid week.

Tropical Depression 5 Forms…

August 11, 2010

A newday1probotlk_1300_torn tropical depression has formed.  This is the 5th depression so far this season.  The system is very unorganized at this point, but the National Hurricane Center in Miami is forecasting it to strengthen into a storm later today.  It will be named Danielle if its winds reach 39 mph.  This system should stay east of our area, but will help increase moisture off the Gulf this weekend.  A front will be moving in at the same time, that should help rain chances increase for Saturday and Sunday.  Here’s the latest projected path as of 7am.
